Projects

The Tropenmuseum Junior also organizes projects outside the museum’s walls. These projects are sometimes linked to the exhibition and sometimes to topical matters.

Villa Zapakara exchange project

Our exchange project with Villa Zapakara children’s cultural house in Paramaribo is inspiring. Since 2010 our exhibitions and programmes get a second life in Suriname. Thanks to this international transfer, not only knowledge is shared internationally but exhibitions, cultural-educational subject matter and methodology are also disseminated internationally. This substantially increases our reach and impact: an additional international public of about 17,000 children per exhibition. Exhibitions and methodology have now been recognized in Suriname as educational reforms and seen as a valuable means of building capacity and strengthening the local community.

Messages for the royal couple

"What would you like to give to the royal couple and why?"; That’s the question the Tropenmuseum Junior asked shopkeepers and market-stall holders in the area known as the Dapperbuurt in east Amsterdam. With the Reinwardt Academie the museum seized the inauguration of the king and queen in 2013 as an opportunity to gather inspiration in the form of messages for the new royal couple. The messages, in word and image, were printed on postcards and shopping bags. In this way the shopkeepers got their message across to their customers.

Summer street art workshops

In the summer of 2012 street artist Derlon Almeida was working in the Bijlmer neighbourhood in southeast Amsterdam. He did a wall painting there, many metres high, on the side of a block of flats (address: Haag en Veld 193 b). Almeida’s work played a prominent role in the hands-on exhibition MixMax Brasil, which was under construction at that time. Three hundred school children from southeast Amsterdam followed an interactive creative workshop inspired by Almeida’s work and one of the exhibition themes - sustainability.
